There are currently around 3,000 deaths a year in the UK from asbestos related disease. This figure is predicted to grow to 10,500 by 2025. Under the control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2006, if you have responsibility for the maintenance and repair of your premises (the duty holder) you have a number of legal responsibilities.

- Presume that material contains asbestos unless there is strong evidence to suggest otherwise.
- Record the location and condition of asbestos in the premises.
- Assess the risks associated with asbestos in the premises.
- Prepare and implement a plan to manage the asbestos
- Pass on relevant information about asbestos containing material to anyone who is likely to work on or disturb it.
